ABC News’ Cokie Roberts to Speak at Sarasota Women’s Luncheon
Long-time ABC News analyst and best-selling author Cokie Roberts will be the keynote speaker at the Sarasota/Manatee/Moffitt Cancer Center Luncheon on Jan. 14, 2010 at The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. The author of several best-selling books about women in America, Roberts has won countless awards during her 40 years in broadcasting.
She will join the Director of Moffitt’s Center for Women’s Oncology Johnathan Lancaster, MD, PhD, for an entertaining and information-packed luncheon. Dr. Lancaster will share news about the progress in ovarian cancer research including basic science and clinical trials that explore the genetic “fingerprint” of a patient’s cancer and known resistance to treatment. Basic science and clinical researchers at Moffitt are studying the biology of ovarian cancer to determine what causes this resistance.
“Ovarian cancer is the most lethal of the gynecologic cancers,” says Dr. Lancaster. “It kills more women than any other type of gynecologic cancer. Patients do well initially until they become resistant to chemotherapy; then they fail rapidly.”
Dr. Lancaster and his colleague Robert Wenham, MD, are part of a landmark national study to discover ways to counter resistance to ovarian cancer treatments. The study uses genetic expression signatures from the patient’s tumor as a biomarker to select a woman’s chemotherapy. Researchers take a biopsy of the tumor, extract its genetic material, place the material on a gene chip, and create a personalized fingerprint to predict the tumor’s response to different anticancer agents. This research examines which of two common, frontline drugs works better in certain patients with platinum-resistant recurrent ovarian cancer.
Moderator Heidi Godman, the medical editor at ABC 7, will be on hand to welcome guests and field questions for Dr. Lancaster. Join Event Chair Mary Forté and Honorary Chair Eileen Curd at noon for what is sure to be a sold-out luncheon. Tickets are available for $100 or $150 for a Patron ticket. Holiday Message from the Moffitt Foundation
Dear Friends,
Season’s greetings to the wonderful supporters of Moffitt Cancer Center. We are deeply grateful to the countless individuals, companies and foundations that partner with us to make a lasting impact on cancer research and care for our patients.
Charitable giving to Moffitt accelerates the momentum in Moffitt’s research laboratories that translates into advanced treatments. From ground-breaking basic science research to collaboration with brilliant minds across the country, Moffitt’s scientists and physicians are on the frontlines of winning this battle and saving every life possible.
Your sacrificial giving during the past year makes every contribution deeply meaningful. Whether it’s sponsorship of an event, a multi-year pledge, a charitable gift annuity, estate bequest, grateful patient gift, membership in the Moffitt Merit Society, or many other ways to give, we value your thoughtfulness.
We also know you give because all too often cancer is deeply personal to you. Perhaps cancer has affected your own life or it has claimed a loved one. Perhaps you want to help create a future for your children and grandchildren that’s cancer-free. Whatever your reasons, you are part of a dramatic revolution in taming this relentless disease and reducing its grip on the 1.4 million people in our nation who confront cancer every year.
This holiday season, your friends at Moffitt Cancer Center remember you with the greatest appreciation. May you celebrate and enjoy the season with family and friends, and may the coming year be full of health and happiness.
Sincerely,

Susan Stern, CFRE

Charitable IRA Legislation Allows Gifts to Charities
Federal legislation passed in 2008 continues to allow certain individuals to make outright gifts to non-profit organizations as direct transfers from their IRAs. Although 401(k)s and Keogh plans are ineligible for a direct transfer, individuals may roll over amounts into an IRA and make an eligible gift from that account.
Donors who qualify must meet the following eligibility terms:
- You are age 70 ½ or older on the day of the gift.
- You make the gift on or before Dec. 31, 2009.
- You transfer funds directly from an IRA.
- You transfer the gift outright to one or more qualified charities.
- You give $100,000 or less this year. (Your spouse also can give up to $100,000 from his or her own IRA if he or she is 70 ½ or older.)
An IRA direct transfer to Moffitt Cancer Center, along with all contributions, provides philanthropic support that’s vital to our cancer research, patient care and educational initiatives. In fact, by pooling all unrestricted contributions, we can immediately put your gift to use by advancing research, purchasing equipment, and helping thousands of cancer patients experience revolutionary new treatment for their illnesses. And you will have the satisfaction of creating a powerful legacy for generations to come.
It’s important to note that the legislation does not permit direct IRA transfers to charitable trusts, donor-advised funds, charitable gift annuities or supporting organizations.
If making an outright gift from your IRA isn’t right for you or if you don’t qualify, we invite you to consider making Moffitt Cancer Center a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement assets.
An IRA transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax deduction, so you can benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deduction. Please consult your tax or financial advisor.
