A Thanksgiving Message to Our Friends and Supporters
These are extraordinary times we are living in. Change is transforming the landscape of America in ways not seen for decades. And yet Thanksgiving reminds us that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Family and friends still gather around tables laden with an abundance of good food and grateful hearts.
At the Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, gratitude is also on our Thanksgiving menu. We are overwhelmed by the kindness, service and generosity that come from all of you who share our determination to prevent and cure cancer. Now more than ever, your loyalty and thoughtfulness is essential to our research, patient care and community education.
Perhaps cancer has claimed a loved one of yours. Maybe you or a family member battles cancer now. Or perhaps you are determined to spare your children and grandchildren from this disease. Whatever your heart’s desire, your partnership with Moffitt Cancer Center is helping us create that future.
Imagine a time when cancer is controllable. Imagine treatments customized for each patient. Imagine the day when Florida no longer loses 40,000 cancer patients a year. Moffitt’s scientists, physicians and staff imagine it every day. And thanks to you and for you, we are transforming these imaginings into lifesaving realities.
Thank you again for your extraordinary support of Moffitt Cancer Center. From the Moffitt Family to your family, warmest Thanksgiving wishes and a joyous Holiday season.
Economic Bailout Bill Extends IRA Rollover
President Bush signed the $700 billion economic bailout bill (H.R. 1424, The Financial Rescue Package) on Oct. 3, 2008, which includes a two-year extension of the IRA Rollover provision.
The legislation allows up to $100,000 donated to charities such as Moffitt Cancer Center without a tax penalty when given from retirees’ individual retirement accounts.
The provision will be made retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008, and will apply to donations made from that date through Dec. 31, 2009.
The provision exempts from taxable income any funds transferred (“rolled over”) from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a charitable organization. The following limitations apply:
- The donor must be age 70½ or older.
- The cap on annual IRA rollovers is $100,000.
- The contribution must be a direct gift to a charity (no planned gifts).
